Is there any relation between comedy movies and the current violence and terror from Myanmar? Apparently, these things are quite contrary one to another, but thanks to Jim Carrey a connection could be made after all.
The popular comedy actor has urged on Friday the United Nations’ Security Council to eventually do something for Myanmar and this hot region’s people. The funny actor has been very serious this time and he has asked the U.N.’s Security Council to ban all the international shipments to Myanmar for pressuring the country to end its violent, brutal suppression of the pro-democracy protesters and the detention of the opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
“This is a government that uses its weapons not in self defense, but against its own citizens.” – has said the actor and comedian during a news conference across the street from the United Nations.
“The time has come for the United Nations Security Council to start acting less like a group of corporations and more like united nations.” – the actor has also added, urging China and Russia — Security Council members that have been resistant to sanctions — as well as India to back the ban.
Starting with the last week, the monks from Myanmar have started to led protests of up to 100,000 people in Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, and also elsewhere. But the marches have been halted by the security forces, who have also raided the monasteries, imposed curfews and have as well killed 10 people, by the official count, obviously.
In this context, Jim Carrey’s speech has been a precursor to a day of other marches and protests planned by the United States’ Campaign for Burma.
The actor has also made an appeal to Than Shwe, the head of the latest junta in 45 unbroken years of military rule of the former Burma: “There is nothing to defend if you have lost the faith of your people. It is already over.”
Jim Carrey is best known for his comic roles from popular movies such as “Dumb and Dumber” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.”

As expected, “Rush Hour 3” is the latest box office record breaker. But more than that it has seemed that the power of martial arts and good humor is as strong as the story of an amnesiac assassin’s trying to do everything for so called justice: in the first weekend of release “Rush Hour 3” has knocked out at box office the last weekend’s record breaker “The Bourne Ultimatum”.
“Rush Hour 3”, starring martial arts actor Jackie Chan and comedian Chris Tucker, has grossed about $50.2 million in its first weekend of release at the United States and Canadian theaters. The third installment has come after six years since the duo’s last romp.
Thanks to their box office’s high scores, both “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “Rush Hour 3” are helping to propel the box office tally towards a record-breaking summer. The both movies are at their franchises’ third theater installment and have in come a large number of fans that have been expected them.
In its second weekend “The Bourne Ultimatum”, starring famous actor Matt Damon, took in $33.7 million in the North American theaters, which marked a 51 percent drop comparing to the first weekend of release.
The box office revenue since the 1st of May however have hit $3.6 billion, compared to $3.3 billion last year, and this weekend has been the fifth in a row to top year-ago numbers.
“This used to be called the dog days of August. Now the dog days are not so bad.” – has said Media by Numbers’ chief Paul Dergarabedian, a movie business analyst. He has also added “We’re looking really good for a record-breaking summer, something back in June we didn’t think would be attainable.”
This weekend, “The Simpsons Movie”, another famous movie, has dropped 56 percent for its third weekend and it has grossed only $11.1 million. However, “The Simpsons Movie” has still finished ahead of two newcomers.
These are “Stardust”, the fantasy movie starring Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, Peter O’Toole and other famous actors, which grossed only $9 million and reached only the 4th position in the charts, and “Daddy Day Camp”, which has taken in only $3.6 million, debuting on the 10th position.
If “Daddy Day Camp” has got a very bad review and critics just before its being released, “Stardust” has been expected to gross a little bit much money at the box office, as its cast is quite significant.
But anyway, the weekend’s most important and box office record breaking movies are “Rush Hour 3” and “The Bourne Ultimatum”.

Starting with Friday a great cast will be starring in the movie theaters in new fantasy movie titled “Stardust”.
Great actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer, who has recently received her Hollywood Walk of Fame star, Robert De Niro, Claire Danes, Sienna Miller, Rupert Everett and Peter O’Toole and other will be fantastically involved in Matthew Vaughn’s latest movie project.
Claire Danes will play a fallen star, which is very appropriate for such an actress, who will be hunting by many people driven by different interests. Although the movie seems to be a little bit to crowded by these people who are all chasing the poor hurt fallen star, the cast would make the movie just lovable.
For example Michelle Pfeiffer will have a strange, but powerful role, which will permit her to show her real acting talent. She will be playing an evil witch who is driven in her hunting Yvaine, Claire Danes’ falling-from-sky character, by her wish of being eternally young and beautiful.
But there are also other even stranger characters who will be go up and down the big screens. Even a unicorn will appear in the fairy tale movie, as well as even the very old actor Peter O’Toole, who will play a dying king, whose children will start battle for their father’s throne.
All in all “Stardust” seem to be an interesting movie to watch. However, one should know that the fantastic feature doesn’t appear to really be a children’s movie. This makes it somehow similar to Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning masterpiece “The Pan’s Labyrinth”.
