“Once” and Its Story

The low-budget musical “Once” seems to be the sleeper hit of the Sundance Film Festival from this year. The story of a Dublin street performer and his friends seems to have started to be on public’s taste. However, the romantic love story behind the scene could have been too a factor of influence.
Glen Hansard, the musical’s star and also the one who wrote most of the score, and his co-star, 19 years old Marketa Irglova, have fallen in love one to each other. This romantic story well hidden behind the movie impressed the public a lot, as real life was now the one that copied the scenario.
Hansard plays the role of a street performer who will fall in love with a beautiful Czech immigrant, who is played by Marketa Irglova. Their relationship starts and they begin to play and to write songs together. While the performer is broken-hearted because of his splitting with his elder girlfriend, the Czech girl is missing her absent husband. They fall in love and this is the start of a beautiful relationship.
Hansard, who is 37 years old, has said about the movie: “Best case scenario, this film does well and my music gets heard by a few extra people. Worst case scenario, this film bombs and I just continue on my path.” Hansard is the frontman of the Irish band called The Frames.
“Once” is an unusually naturalistic musical, as Hansard uses the term “visual album” to describe it. The songs are in fact woven into the action. The two singers are followed as they write together, rehearse and record their songs. Irglova is Hansard’s real-life musical collaborator.
“We’ve been hanging out a lot and this film has thrown us into each other’s company a lot more than we ever were.” – said Hansard, adding that during their trip to the United States they started their romantic relationship.
“It’s just kind of developed and it’s beautiful and I love her and I want to be with her.”
